Don't you just love the smell of comedy in the morning? I do, and Tom Gleeson does too, having spent two weeks over Christmas (2006 - 2007) 'entertaining the troops' in Iraq, Afghanistan, and some 'secret' countries which shall remain nameless in the interests of national security. Well, the army could tell you, but then they'd have to kill you. No, they really would.
These countries are referred to as 'nowhere'. I'd really like to know where 'nowhere' is - my teenage son goes there all the time. To do nothing. With no-one.
Anyhow, Tom gets asked to do a comedic tour of duty, (some guys get all the good gigs!), with fellow entertainers singer-songwriter Alan Caswell, didgeridoo player Adrian Ross, and country and western singers, sisters Brooke, Sam, and Molly McClymont. Their band is called 'The McClymonts'. Country and Western entertainers are so straightforward. By all accounts, a lovely group to tour a war zone with.
The tour is a bloody big 'boys' own' adventure. How many comics do you know that get to dress up like a pirate, fire a machine gun, and do doughnuts in a tank in Iraq? Or have a sleepover in one of Saddam's former hunting palaces? Exactly. The cool factor's off the scale, as far as tours go. And by the way, did you know they have a McDonald's, a Subway, and a Pizza Hut to chow down in on many of these bases? It's just as well they have free McHealthcare! You know, to treat the potential military food induced McHeart attacks.
This book is a great read. More of a substantial snack than a main course, it's ideal to read during a flight, and in my case, a very good distraction from a train full of noisy Hawthorn supporters, (mostly old girls who, it seems, were former football legends and coaches themselves, and therefore abundantly qualified to critique current and former Hawthorn coaches on their 'strategy'. Noisily!).
If you like Tom Gleeson, and you like an entertaining read, you should check this book out. If you don't find it funny, you can give me 200 push-ups and go mop the latrines.Yes, I am feeling very 4077 right now. Oh, and while you're at it, why don't you check out Tom's Melbourne International Comedy Festival Show, (no, it doesn't have 'Tom' in the title this year), 'Going at It With A Big Stick'. It's on at The Melbourne Town Hall throughout the festival. You want more details? Go google it or something. What am I, your mother?
